A-TACS stands for Advanced Tactical Concealment Systems. It is a camouflage pattern that uses naturally shaped pixels that bring together a muted blend of real-world colors. It functions as a universal camouflage and works best in open, rocky, arid and urban environments. It is designed for military, special forces and tactical departments. How A-TACS Works: Digital Concealment Systems, the creators of A-TACS, set out on a mission to correct flaws pinpointed in previous camo designs. To do so, they removed all 90-degree angles from the design. By taking away digital square pixels, they created a camouflage design with an organic, fluid appearance that allows for concealment from a variety of distances. This "pattern within a pattern" look lets the human outline nearly diminish at a variety of distances. It allows for a greater and more versatile concealment method than ever before. With a palette of colors digitally sampled from the natural world, A-TACS revolutionizes camouflage by utilizing a mathematical algorithm to form organic pixels. By doing so, they developed a digital pattern without a digital look, giving way to a truly chameleon-like camo.

3 blankets from Major Surplus are back in stock we had run out back in November 2011. The feed back on these blankets has been mixed but overall positive. All are imported from India and a 55% wool blend. We recommend with these blankets as all others that you dry clean or wash in cold water and hang dry. Many blankets when machine washed will fall apart:

Barre Army Navy Store saves the day

Wednesday, January 25, 2012
I liked the sound of the title of this review. Barre Army Navy Store sells the full line of Propper clothing products. Propper's BDU pants (see http://shop.vtarmynavy.com/bduacutactical-pantsshorts---propper-c335.aspx) have been a standard for other companies to aspire to for years. Selling Propper products is fun and easy because they are made to last and they ship quickly.

Many customers call us with last minute requests so when Cindy called and also emailed over night, we were able to reach her the next day and get her daughter's trousers out that day. For us it is just business as usual but it is always nice to have some recognize competence. Questions about products or delivery email info@vtarmynavy.com or call 802-479-2289:

24/7 Tactical Pants in Coyote Brown Color more accurate than others.

http://shop.vtarmynavy.com/tru-spec-247-tactical-pants-c989.aspx

Sizing for Tactical Pants is similar to bdu and acu sizing with Small waist being 27-31 inches, Medium 31-35 inches, Large 35-39 inches, XL 39-43 inches, 2XL 43-47 inches, etc. Inseams are short 28-30 inches, Regular 30-32 inches and Long 32-34 inches. Review:I have seveal pair of 5.11 tactical pants but wanted to try the Tru Spec ones. The color is a more accurate Coyote brown than the 5.11's and the construction is very solid. The design of the various pockets is very cool with lots of options. I got the 100% cotton version since I think the poly/cotton does not breath as well. The 5.11 is a cotton/poly 60/40 blend and does breath pretty well.
However, the Tru Spec's look and fit very well.

Dressing for Winter in New England

Winter in New England takes some wild swings. While many of you do not hike or want to hike in high elevations for long periods of time in winter weather.
The lessons I've learned doing it translate into every day life pretty well.

First is that you do not want to slide in any circumstances. My slide on Mt Lafayette back in 2006 almost ended my hiking career. When you are hiking the worst thing you can do is slide. If you loose traction, you can keep sliding which can lead to multiple internal injuries and broken bones.

Many of people who hike weekly here in the White mountains use micro spikes. The word micro spikes covers a wide spectrum of products from Yaktrax to Crampons see http://shop.vtarmynavy.com/ice-traction-devices-misc-c1171.aspx.

Personally I use Kahtoola micro spikes for many icy conditions and packed snow. But more vertical slopes or heavy ice conditions require crampons as micro spikes do not have the length to hold you in place.

How does this translate into walking in your yard? Traction devices will allow you not to fall on black ice conditions like those found this morning here in Barre, VT. I think I'm pretty stable and I crashed twice in the last 24 hours in my parking lot of course not wearing micro spikes.

The other aspect of winter here is the cold. On 1/15 Robie and I did Lafayette ridge in -15 with a 30 mile an hour conditions and on 1/22 I did the other side of the road the Kinsman Ridge in sub zero conditions. The key to dressing for these types of situations is to wear lots of layers. On top I use a polyester wicking first layer and wool shirts as well as a vest in extreme conditions. I use glove liners when I have to take mittens off and I use multiples of both liners and mittens. I sweat profusely and need to change layers on a regular basis. See winter layers here http://shop.vtarmynavy.com/thermal-underwear-and-warm-clothing-c608.

So once again how does this translate into everyday life. Layering up or down for conditions is tremendously important. If it is raining or wet snow is coming down you need to wear a water proof, preferably breathable layer. If you are active go in side and change layers so that you don't get chilled and wet shoes, socks and gloves or mittens should be changed as needed.
